Homily of His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros at the Great Vespers of the Exaltation of the Cross
Today you will receive your own cross to wear and to cherish. Wear it with
honor, with courage, with a sense of self-denial. Taking up the Cross, you
accept the invitation to strive, to struggle, and to suffer for the sake of
the Lord and His Church. And you also accept the call to take part in His
triumph, and to have no other glory or boast or ambition in life, than the
Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Encyclical for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (09/14/2016)
Our reconciliation to God through the Cross was an act of great sacrifice.
In lifting up the Cross before us, we recognize that an instrument of grace

Himself as an unblemished offering.

Encyclical for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross (09/14/2010)
On this Feast of the Universal Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving
Cross, I greet you in the love and joy of our Lord Jesus Christ, and I ask
you to contemplate the meaning of our commemoration through one of the
inspiring hymns of this day. In the service of Great Vespers we sing:
“Enlighten us by your brightness, O life-giving Cross; make us holy by your
might O all venerable Cross; and strengthen us through your Exaltation.”
This threefold prayerful petition as presented in the hymn offers guidance
to us in understanding the meaning of the glorious Feast of the Universal
Exaltation of the Precious Cross.

Sharing in the Victory of the Cross
In our own lives, the Cross of our Savior evokes profound feelings of love.
Do we not see innocent love in the eyes of young children when they enter a
House of Worship or when they sit at the table to dine, as they reverently
make the sign of the Cross
