We give thanks to God on this blessed day as we do and should on every day for His gift of life. This is a day to reflect on the many aspects and experiences of our lives for which we are grateful; but at the foundation of all of this is life we have been given by God and our gratitude to Him for what He has done for us. As we offer all honor and glory, we praise the name of God with a song, and we magnify Him with thanksgiving (Psalm 69:30).

On this day of Thanksgiving we are blessed as Orthodox Christians to offer gratitude to God, our Creator, who gives us life and has revealed His amazing and transforming love for us. He is the source and foundation of our thanksgiving, as we respond to His love and presence offering our praise and adoration. Our worship affirms the words of the Psalmist as we come into His presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise! (Psalm 95:2)

However, we should also recognize that the act and attitude of thanksgiving is also related to struggle and hardship. The first Thanksgiving, which provided the origins of our national observance, followed an arduous and costly journey to this land by the Pilgrims. To escape persecution, they made a lengthy voyage to this continent, faced disease and death, and attempted to establish a new home in very challenging physical and natural conditions. Their survival of these hardships through faith and hope led them in 1621 to offer thanksgiving to God for His amazing grace and providence.

When we commune with Him and offer our prayers of thanksgiving for all that He gives to us, we have no need for anxiety or worry. From day to day and year to year the circumstances of our lives will change. Challenges will come. Great joy and happiness will be experienced. Dear family members and friends will leave this temporal life. New relationships will begin. Through all of this, we are encouraged by the Apostle Paul to have no anxiety about anything because our trust is in our Creator and Redeemer.
