New York State Education Department Approves the Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek as a 4 + 1 World Language Pathway Assessment

The Department of Greek Education of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America is pleased to announce that the World Language Comprehensive in Modern Greek was recently approved by the New York State Education Department to be used as a 4+1 World Language pathway assessment leading to a diploma requirement in New York State. Under the “4+1” pathway assessment option, students must take and pass four required Regents exams (one in each of the following subjects: English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies) and complete a comparably rigorous pathway to meet the fifth assessment requirement for graduation. https://www.nysed.gov/curriculum-instruction/world-languages-approved-assessments

The Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek is a foreign language achievement test that assesses student proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing Modern Greek. It is developed and administered by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America/ Department of Greek Education in collaboration with the Literacy and Language Assessment Office/ NYC Department of Education. The World Language Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek is aligned to the Checkpoint B learning standards as described in the New York State Learning Standards for World Languages (Modern Languages) - formerly known as Languages Other Than English (LOTE).

In order to ensure fair and accurate assessment, the World Language Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek is annually reviewed and evaluated by the World Languages Program/ Department of Linguistics/ University at Buffalo/ The State University of New York and The Institute of Modern Greek Studies/ Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece.

It is also worth mentioning that on November 14, 1972 the Examination in Modern Greek was officially approved by the New York State Education Department to be used towards the Regents High School Diploma.
