Fr. Dionisios Marketos, a retired priest of the Archdiocese, died Nov. 20 after a brief illness. He was 93.

Fr. Marketos was born April 20, 1943 in Cephalonia, Greece, to Angelos and Anna Marketos. After completing high school, he completed the Public Trade School in Athens, studying accounting, and also attended seminars in Byzantine music and teleturgics at Rizario Theological School.

After serving in the Greek army, he worked as an accountant in Athens.

He emigrated to the United States in 1967 and married Anastasia Aravadinou at St. Phanourios Church in Elizabeth, N.J., in 1968.

In the years prior to his ordination, he worked in the fur industry until becoming a priest later in life.

He was ordained to the diaconate by Bishop Philotheos of Meloa on March 24, 1996, and, on Aug. 27, 1997, he was ordained to the priesthood at St. Phanourios Church by Bishop Alexios of Troas. He was appointed as pastor of Transfiguration Church in Mattituck by Archbishop Demetrios.

In 2008, at the direction of Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey, he was appointed as the priest of Evangelismos Church in Jersey City, where he served until his retirement on March 1, 2016.

Survivors include his presvytera, Anastasia; children Anna and Stephanos; and other relatives.

Funeral service took place Nov. 23, at St. Demetrios Church, Astoria, N.Y.

Burial was at St. Nektarios Monastery in Roscoe, N.Y.
