«Ο Σεβασμιώτατος Αρχιεπίσκοπος Αμερικής κ. Δημήτριος προσωποποιεί τις αξίες που αντιπροσωπεύει το Αθηναγόρειο Βραβείο Ανθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων - τον ανθρωπισμό, την ταπείνωση, την ιερότητα, την ευσπλαγχνία και την ηγεσία. Δεν θα ξεχάσουμε ποτέ την εξαιρετική προσωπική προσφορά του στον τραγικό απολογισμό των τρομοκρατικών επιθέσεων της 11ηςΣεπτεμβρίου. Με την ευκαιρία της 40ής επετείου από της χειροτονίας του σε Επίσκοπο και των οκτώ χρόνων αρχιεπισκοπικής ποιμαντορίας του ως Αρχιεπισκόπου Αμερικής, τον τιμούμε για την παραδειγματική προσφορά του στην ανθρωπότητα ως Ορθόδοξου Ιεράρχη, θεολόγου, πολιτικής προσωπικότητας και μελετητή των Γραφών».
Το Αθηναγόρειο Βραβείο καθιερώθηκε το 1986 προς τιμήν του αείμνηστου Πατριάρχη Αθηναγόρα, ο οποίος προ της εκλογής του σε Οικουμενικό Πατριάρχη το 1948 υπηρέτησε ως Αρχιεπίσκοπος Αμερικής επί 18 έτη. Αναγνωρίσθηκε παγκοσμίως ως οραματιστής ηγέτης της Ορθοδοξίας της οποίας τα μέλη ανά τον κόσμο αριθμούν 250 περίπου εκατομμύρια. Εργάσθηκε για την εδραίωση της ειρήνης στις σχέσεις μεταξύ Εκκλησιών και ανθρώπων καθ' όλη τη διάρκεια της ζωής του. Ανάμεσα στους βραβευμένους με το Αθηναγόρειο Βραβείο συγκαταλέγεται ο αείμνηστος Αρχιεπίσκοπος Ιάκωβος, ο Πρόεδρος ΗΠΑ Jimmy Carter, ο Πρόεδρος ΗΠΑ George H.W. Bush, ο Πρόεδρος Σοβιετικής Ενώσεως Mikhael Gorbachev, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Desmond Tutu, η Αδελφή Τερέζα και ο Elie Wiesel.
Συνοδευόμενος από τον Υφυπουργό Εξωτερικών των ΗΠΑ κ. John Negroponte, τον Καρδινάλιο Theodore McCarrick και τον Δρ. Λυμπεράκη, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος έτυχε της ενθουσιώδους υποδοχής των παρευρισκομένων καθώς εισήλθε στην κατάμεστη αίθουσα. Ο Υφυπουργός Negroponte ηγήθηκε πλειάδας επισήμων οι οποίοι εξύμνησαν τον τιμώμενο Ιεράρχη. Ανάμεσα σ' αυτούς ήσαν ο Πρέσβης της Ελλάδας στις ΗΠΑ Αλέξανδρος Μαλλιάς, ο Πρέσβης της Κύπρου στις ΗΠΑ Ανδρέας Κακούρης, ο επικεφαλής της Ευρωπαϊκής Αντιπροσωπίας στις ΗΠΑ Πρέσβης Άγγελος Παγκράτης, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος της Ρωμαιοκαθολικής Εκκλησίας στην Ουάσιγκτον Καρδινάλιος Theodore McCarrick και ο Δρ. Αντώνιος Τρακατέλλης, Αντιπρόεδρος του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου και αδελφός του Αρχιεπισκόπου Δημητρίου.
Τον ρόλο του τελετάρχη της βραδιάς ανέλαβε ο Βουλευτής του Κογκρέσου Zack Space του Δημοκρατικού Κόμματος από το Οχάιο. Η Μαρία Φοσκαρίνη Ιδρύτρια και Εκτελεστική Διευθύντρια του Κέντρου Εθνικής Δικαιοσύνης για θέματα Αστέγων και Πτωχών (NLCHP) απηύθυνε προσφώνηση στις Κυρίες του Τάγματος του Αγίου Ανδρέα κατά τη διάρκεια δεξίωσης το απόγευμα του Σαββάτου.
Στα ολόθερμα σχόλιά του περί του καλού φίλου του Αρχιεπισκόπου Δημητρίου ο Καρδινάλιος McCarrick μετέφερε τις ευχές του Οικουμενικού Πατριάρχη κ.κ. Βαρθολομαίου με τον οποίον είχε συναντηθεί προσφάτως στη Νεάπολη της Ιταλίας. Τελειώνοντας είπε: «Γνωρίζετε πόσο ευλογημένοι είσαστε πού έχετε αυτό τον υπέροχο Αρχιεπίσκοπο. Το γνωρίζετε σεις όπως το γνωρίζουμε κι εμείς».
«Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Δημήτριος», είπε ο Υφυπουργός Negroponte, «έρχεται να προστεθεί στον κατάλογο των τιμωμένων ως στυλοβάτης πίστεως ο οποίος έχει επιδείξει παραδειγματική προσφορά στην ανθρωπότητα ως εξαιρετικός ανθρωπιστής και υποστηρικτής των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων ... Σεβασμιώτατε, σας είμεθα υπόχρεοι για την σοφία σας, τις πράξεις σας και την πίστη σας. Παρακαλώ δεχθείτε τα βαθειά μου συγχαρητήρια».
Στόν απαντητικό λόγο του, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Δημήτριος ευχαρίστησε αφειδόλευτα τους Άρχοντες, τους ομιλητές, τους επισήμους και όλους τους παρευρισκομένους και εξέθεσε τις σκέψεις του σχετικά με τα ιδανικά καί την σημασία του Αθηναγόρειου Βραβείου Ανθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων για τα ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα και την θρησκευτική ελευθερία. Ο Σεβασμιώτατος τόνισε την ανάγκη για περισσότερους διαθρησκειακούς και διαπολιτισμικούς διαλόγους λέγοντας ότι δεν είναι δυνατόν να χειρίζεται κανείς θέματα ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων χωρίς την ύπαρξη ουσιαστικού διαλόγου.
Αρχιεπίσκοπος Δημήτριος
Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Δημήτριος έχει ανταποκριθεί σε πλήθος εθνικών και παγκοσμίων κρίσεων όπως το Μακεδονικό ζήτημα τον Νοέμβριο του 2004 και συγκεκριμένες τρομοκρατικές ενέργειες όπως τα επεισόδια εναντίον του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου και η επίθεση στο σχολείο του Beslan της Ρωσσίας τον μήνα Σεπτέμβριο του 2004. Τον Μάρτιο του 2005, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Δημήτριος κατέθεσε ενώπιον της Επιτροπής Ελσίνκι του Κογκρέσου σχετικά με ζητήματα θρησκευτικής ελευθερίας και λειτουργίας του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου στην Τουρκία.
Ενρονισθείς στον Αρχιεπισκοπικό Καθεδρικό Ναό της Αγίας Τριάδας στις 18 Σεπτεμβρίου 1999, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Δημήτριος, πνευματικός ηγέτης ενός και ημίσεως εκατομμυρίου Ελλήνων Ορθοδόξων Χριστιανών στην Αμερική και Έξαρχος του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου, είναι ο έκτος κατά σειρά Αρχιεπίσκοπος Αμερικής από της ιδρύσεώς της το έτος 1922.
Στο χρονικό διάστημα από την ενθρόνισή του και μετά, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος εργάζεται με τον κλήρο καί τον λαό της Αρχιεπισκοπής σε μια έντονη προσπάθεια να ισχυροποιήσει τις συνθήκες ενότητας και ειρήνης και να προαγάγει την διοικητική και εκκλησιαστική σταθερότητα του έργου της Εκκλησίας στην Αμερική. Το Αρχιποιμαντικό άγγελμά του καλεί όλους σε ενότητα, αληθινές σχέσεις και ολοένα αυξανόμενη αφοσίωση στον Θεό και τη διακονία στο όνομα του Χριστού.
Δοξολογία Ημέρας του ΟΧΙ και Χειροθεσία Νέων Αρχόντων
Ο Σεβασμιώτατος Αρχιεπίσκοπος κ. Δημήτριος προεξήρχε της τελετής Χειροθεσίας 23 νέων Αρχόντων από ολόκληρη την επικράτεια των ΗΠΑ, η οποία έλαβε χώρα μετά τη Θεία Λειτουργία της Κυριακής, 28 Οκτωβρίου στον Αρχιεπισκοπικό Καθεδρικό Ναό της Αγίας Τριάδας. Προ της Χειροθεσίας, εψάλη Δοξολογία επ' ευκαιρία της 67ης επετείου της Ημέρας του ΟΧΙ, ημέρας κατά την οποία η Ελλάδα ύψωσε θαρραλέα το ανάστημά της και αντέταξε ισχυρό ΟΧΙ στην επιθυμία των φασιστικών δυνάμεων να την καθυποτάξουν και να την κυριεύσουν.
Deputy Secretary Negroponte Lauds Archbishop as “Stalwart Man of Faith”New York, NY – His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America was the recipient of the Athenagoras Human Rights Award of the Order of St. Andrew, Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in an emotion- filled evening, Saturday, October 27, at the New York Hilton. In presenting the award, Dr. Anthony J. Limberakis, National Commander of the Order of St. Andrew stated:
“His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America exemplifies the very elements that constitute the Athenagoras Human Rights Award - humanity, humility, holiness, compassion and leadership. We will never forget his extraordinary personal care in the tragic aftermath of the 9-11 terrorist attacks. On the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of his ordination to the Episcopacy and eighth year as Archbishop of America, we honor him for his exemplary service to humankind as an Orthodox hierarch, theologian, statesman and biblical scholar.”
Established in 1986, the Athenagoras Award honors Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras who served as Archbishop of the Americas for 18 years before being elected Ecumenical Patriarch in 1948. He was universally acknowledged as a visionary leader of Orthodoxy, numbering more than 250 million faithful worldwide, who worked for peace among Churches and people throughout his life. Previous recipients have included Archbishop Iakovos, President Jimmy Carter, President George H.W. Bush, President Mikhael Gorbachev, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Mother Teresa and Elie Wiesel.
Escorted by Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte, Cardinal Theodore McCarrick and Dr. Limberakis, Archbishop Demetrios received an enthusiastic and warm reception as he entered a packed ballroom. Ambassador Negroponte led a list of dignitaries extolling the honored guest including: Ambassador of Greece Alexandros Mallias, Ambassador of Cyprus Andreas Kakouris, Deputy Head of Delegation of the European Commission in the U.S Ambassador Angelos Pangratis, Archbishop Emeritus of Washington, DC Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, and Dr. Antonios Trakatellis, former Vice President of the European Parliament and brother of Archbishop Demetrios.
Congressman Zack Space (D-OH), served as Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Maria Foscarinis, founder and Executive Director of the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty (NLCHP) addressed the Order of St. Andrew Ladies’ Tea reception on Saturday afternoon.
In his heartfelt comments regarding his good friend Archbishop Demetrios, Cardinal McCarrick also brought greetings from Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew with whom he had just been in Naples, Italy, and in conclusion said that “you know how blessed you are in having this great Archbishop, you know it and we know it, too.”
“Archbishop Demetrios”, said Deputy Secretary Negroponte, “joins a distinguished group of honorees as a stalwart man of faith who has demonstrated exemplarily service to humankind, as an extraordinary humanitarian and advocate of human rights. …Your Eminence, we are indebted to you for your wisdom, your deeds and your faith, please accept my deep congratulations.”
In his response Archbishop Demetrios generously thanked the Archons, the guest speakers and honored guests on the dais and reflected on the ideals and significance of the Athenagoras Human Rights Award for human rights and religious freedom. His Eminence emphasized the need for more interreligious and intercultural dialogues stating that it is not possible to deal with human rights without dialogue.
Archbishop Demetrios
Archbishop Demetrios has responded to numerous national and international needs and crises including the Macedonian issue in November 2004, and specific acts of terrorism, such as the violence against the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the attack on the school in Beslan, Russia, both in September of 2004. In March of 2005, Archbishop Demetrios testified before the Helsinki Commission regarding issues of religious freedom and the function of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Turkey.
Enthroned at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity on September 18, 1999, Archbishop Demetrios, the spiritual leader of 1.5 million Greek Orthodox Christians in America and Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, is the sixth Archbishop of America since the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese was established in 1922.
In the time following his enthronement, Archbishop Demetrios has met with clergy and laity of the Archdiocese in an intense effort to strengthen conditions of unity and peace and to advance the administrative and ecclesiastical stability of the work of the Church in America. His Archpastoral message has been one that has called for unity, genuine relationships, and an ever-increasing commitment to God and to service in the name of Christ.
OXI Day Doxology and Investiture of New Archons
His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios presided at the Investiture of 23 new Archons, from throughout the United States, following the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, October 28 at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. Prior to the Investiture, a Doxology Service was held in Commemoration of the 67th Anniversary of OXI Day, the day the nation of Greece took a brave position by issuing a resounding “NO” –“OXI”—to the desire of fascism to subjugate and occupy Greece.
