Κατά τη διάρκεια ενός θερμού και εγκαρδίου προγεύματος, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος και ο νέος Πρέσβυς συζήτησαν σειρά θεμάτων που αφορούν την Αμερική και την Ελλάδα. Ο κ. Speckhard εξέφρασε την ευγνωμοσύνη του για την συνάντηση με τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο η οποία ήταν και η πρώτη του επίσημη επαφή αφ' ότου έλαβε το χρίσμα από την Αμερικανική Γερουσία καί δήλωσε εμφατικά ότι θα επιζητεί επί τακτικής βάσεως την καθοδήγηση και στήριξη του Αρχιεπισκόπου. Επίσης, διαβεβαίωσε τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο Δημήτριο ότι θα συνεργασθεί με την Αρχιεπισκοπή Αμερικής για να ενημερώνεται σχετικά με τα τρέχοντα θέματα που απασχολούν τις δύο χώρες.
Στον μεταξύ τους διάλογο, μεταξύ άλλων ο νέος Πρέσβυς Speckhard ζήτησε από τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο την άποψή του σε ειδικά θέματα όπως την ενδυνάμωση της καλής διαθέσεως μεταξύ των δύο χωρών. Επίσης ζήτησε από τον Σεβασμιώτατο την προσωπική του άποψη σχετικά με την ιστορική εξέλιξη των διμερών σχέσεων και ενδιαφέρθηκε να ενημερωθεί για την κατάσταση υπό την οποία τελεί το Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείο σήμερα. Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος ανέπτυξε κάθε θέμα στα πλαίσια ενός πλήρους και ουσιαστικού διαλόγου. Τέλος, ο νέος Πρέσβυς ευχαρίστησε τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο για τον αποφασιστικό ρόλο που διεδραμάτισε στην αντιμετώπιση των συνεπειών των καταστρεπτικών πυρκαϊών στην Ελλάδα. Επήνεσε την ηγεσία της Αρχιεπισκοπής για την ίδρυση του Ταμείου Ανακουφίσεως Πυροπλήκτων Ελλάδος και τόνισε τον ζωτικό ρόλο της στη συνεχιζόμενη διαδικασία αποκαταστάσεως. Διαβεβαίωσε τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο ότι η Αμερικανική Πρεσβεία στην Αθήνα θα διατηρήσει στενές σχέσεις με την Αρχιεπισκοπή Αμερικής.
Τέλος, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος συνεχάρη καί ευχαρίστησε τον νέο Πρέσβυ Speckhard για το πρόθυμο πνεύμα συνεργασίας που επέδειξε. Ευχαρίστησε, επίσης, όλους όσοι παρευρέθησαν στη συνάντηση: κ. Ο διορισθείς Πρέσβυς Speckhard έχει υπηρετήσει ως Αναπληρωτής Επικεφαλής Αποστολής στο Ιράκ, ως Πρέσβυς ΗΠΑ στη Λευκορωσσία, και ως Αναπληρωτής Βοηθός Γενικός Γραμματέας του ΝΑΤΟ επί Πολιτικών Σχέσεων, θέση μέσω της οποίας διαχειρίσθηκε πολιτικές σχέσεις με πολλές Ορθόδοξες Χριστιανικές χώρες στην Ανατολική Ευρώπη.
Washington, DC - Archbishop Demetrios of America met today with the U.S. Ambassador-Designate to Greece, Daniel Speckhard, in Washington, DC. Ambassador-Designate Speckhard will be sworn in tomorrow morning.
During their warm and cordial breakfast-meeting, the Archbishop and Ambassador-Designate discussed a number of issues relating to America and Greece. The Ambassador-Designate began the discussion by noting that he was grateful for the opportunity to meet with the Archbishop, his first official meeting since being confirmed by the United States Senate. He emphasized that he would seek the guidance and assistance of the Archbishop on a regular basis. He also assured Archbishop Demetrios that he will work with the Archdiocese of America to gain input on the contemporary issues confronting the two countries.
In their dialogue, Ambassador-Designate Speckhard asked the Archbishop about specific issues: how to increase the good will between Greece and America; the Archbishops historical perspective on relations between the two countries, and the current status of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The Archbishop addressed each issue in a full and robust discussion. Finally, the Ambassador-Designate thanked the Archbishop for the decisive role of the Archdiocese after the devastating wildfires in Greece. He commended the leadership of the Archdiocese in establishing the Greek Fire Relief Fund and emphasized its continuing vital role in the process of recovery. He assured the Archbishop that the U.S. Embassy in Athens will maintain close contact with the Archdiocese. Archbishop Demetrios thanked Ambassador-Designate Speckhard for his willing spirit of cooperation. Ambassador-designate Speckhard has served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Iraq, as United States Ambassador to Belarus, and has served as NATOs Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs, covering political relations with many Orthodox Christian countries in Eastern Europe.
