The Hellenic Initiative Donates $50,000 to Support Isolated Greek Communities

THI and Axion Hellas collaborate to provide vital healthcare services and educational programs on the Greek Islands

The Hellenic Initiative (THI) supported and participated in Greek NGO Axion Hellas’ April 12-21 mission, delivering essential healthcare and educational programs to the Greek islands of Sifnos, Schoinoussa, Astypalaia, Amorgos, and Kimolos. THI contributed $50,000 to support this mission, covering transportation, accommodation, and essential equipment costs.

Founded in 2016, Axion Hellas has grown from delivering healthcare to remote islands to offering cultural events, infrastructure support, and educational programs. The recent mission involved 100 volunteers, including 50 medical professionals, who conducted nearly 4,000 medical examinations for 1,342 island residents.

Aliki Drakouli, President of Axion Hellas, highlighted the mission’s purpose “Our goal is straightforward - to visit remote areas of Greece, spend several days there, and provide much-needed equipment and services to enhance the quality of life in local communities”. Key to Axion Hellas’ success are its thorough research, preparation, and follow-up. Before each journey, mayors are consulted about community needs, and an initial delegation assesses the situation.

Founded in 2012, THI is a global non-profit organization that brings together Diaspora Greeks and Philhellenes to invest in Greece through programs focused on economic development and crisis relief. Since its founding, THI has invested more than $22,3 million in Greece and has grown to be the largest Greek Diaspora organization in the world.

George P. Stamas, THI’s Board President, stated, “Crisis relief for Greece means relief throughout Greece, and Axion Hellas helps us fulfill that goal.”

Andrew N. Liveris, THI’s Board Chairman, stated, “Collaborations like ours with Axion Hellas ensure we address both immediate needs and long-term development, making a lasting impact on the communities we visit.”
