Stavros Niarchos Foundation Donates 5 Million Dollars for the Rebuilding of Saint Nicholas at the WTC

New York – The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America announces with great joy that the Stavros Niarchos Foundationfulfilled last week, its noble pledge of five million dollars to the Fund for the rebuilding of the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas National Shrine at the World Trade Center.

His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios expressing his gratitude to the Niarchos Foundation said: “The Stavros Niarchos Foundation is not simply helping to resurrect a church structure but is participating in rebuilding a national and global symbol that speaks to the people of this country about Orthodoxy as a major faith on the American landscape, and about the universal Hellenic values. The Niarchos Foundation, with this donation, supports the extraordinary and solemn responsibility of the Greek Orthodox Faith to manifest how an act of hatred and violence can be overcome by an act of love.”

The Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas was the only place of worship destroyed by the attacks of September 11, 2001 and is now being rebuilt in a prominent location, only a few yards away from its original position, at the end of Liberty Park and at the corner of Liberty and Greenwich Streets, overlooking the September 11 Memorial.
