Holy Eparchial Synod Convenes

New York - The Holy Eparchial Synod of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America convened in the Holy Synod Room of the Archdiocese, in New York City, October 18 and 19, 2006.

His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios presided. The following members of the Synod were present for this session: His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago, His Eminence Metropolitan Maximos of Pittsburgh, His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios of Boston, His Eminence Metropolitan Isaiah of Denver, His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta, His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco, and His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey. Also present was the V. Reverend Archimandrite Sebastianos Skordallos, newly appointed Chief Secretary of the Holy Eparchial Synod. His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit was absent due to illness.

The Agenda included the following subjects:

  • The guidelines for the Operation Regulations of the Holy Synod
  • The guidelines for the Regulations of the Ecclesiastical Spiritual Court
  • The program of education for candidates for the Permanent Diaconate
  • The Hellenic College/Holy Cross School of Theology
  • The last SCOBA Conference in Chicago
  • Liturgical matters including the preparation of the text of the Divine Liturgy for approval by the Holy Eparchial Synod
  • Canonical issues regarding Church order
  • Pastoral issues concerning the clergy of the Holy Archdiocese
  • Religious Education
  • Greek Education
  • The nomination of three candidates (“triprosopon”) for the election of one of them, by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, to the position of the Auxiliary Bishop in the Metropolis of Chicago.
  • Various issues concerning the life of the Church in general.
