Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America To Hold Two Educational Seminars in New York

New York, NY - The Office of Education of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America will hold two separate educational seminars in the New York area, under the auspices of His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America.

The first is an Educational and Training Seminar on the subject of teaching Modern Greek and it will take place on Saturday Nov. 4, between 9:00 am and 3:30 pm, in the “Stephanos and Areti Tserpelis - St Nicholas School,” located at 196-10 Northern Blvd., Flushing, NY.

The seminar will include sample lessons, teaching practices and techniques for teaching Modern Greek as a second language. The presentations will be made by the educators Elisavet Laskaris, Afrodite Pappas, Eva Panagi and George Kanellopoulos. Dr. Ioannis Efthymiopoulos, the director of the Office of Education will coordinate the seminar program. Information can be obtained by calling Dr. Efthymiopoulos at (212) 774-0233.

The second seminar is the Annual Staff-Development Seminar of the Direct Archdiocesan District Office of Education and it will be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2006, at the High School of St. Demetrios Cathedral in Astoria, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. About 200 educators are expected to attend.

The Seminar aims at offering the best in-service training to the teachers of the Greek Orthodox parochial day schools of the metropolitan New York area. Because it is very important for teachers to maintain the knowledge and skills they need to help all students achieve high learning standards, the Direct Archdiocesan District Office of Education has arranged for a wide array of workshops to help the day school teachers integrate new knowledge and techniques into their practice.

The workshops cover all areas of study and all grades (nursery to high school) and are as follows: Creating a Quality Early Childhood Classroom Learning Environment; Crafting Characters Using Picture Books; Literacy in the Classroom; Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers; Habitat Ecology Learning Program; Stress and Anger Management; Classroom Management; Evaluation and Treatment of ADD/ADHD Disorders; ESL: Teaching in the Multi-Level Classroom; Technology in the Classroom (Use of Power Point, Internet and Webquests); School Safety/School Negligence and the Law; and Sexual Harassment. The presenters of the workshops are currently teaching at renowned universities or work in other educational institutions.

The principals of the District’s parochial day schools have officially designated "Election Day", which falls on November 7th this year, as “Staff-Development Day” for their teaching staff. And the day schools will be closed on that day. For information on these workshops and the day’s program, please contact the director of the Direct Archdiocesan District Office of Education Maria Makedon, at (212) 570-3553.
