Celebrating International Greek Language Day

On February 9 we celebrate international Greek language day. Started in 2017 to coincide with the annual commemoration of Greece’s national poet, Dionysios Solomos (April 8, 1798 – February 9, 1857), whose lyrics are featured in the Greek National Anthem, International Greek Language Day aims to promote awareness of the language’s unparalleled influence on other writing systems around the world.

The aim of this day is to highlight the essential role the Greek language has played in world culture throughout the centuries. Its’ influence and contributions to the entire world are unparalleled. It has fundamentally contributed to the terminology of Medicine, Mathematics, and Philosophy.

On this day we would like to extend our appreciation to all those who dedicate their time and efforts to teaching the Greek language and culture throughout the world.

As the great Palamas once said, “In these nurseries of Greek Christian Education, the community trusts you to offer the new generation a deep knowledge of our language, clothed in the light of faith, so that the cultivation of their mind and soul is certain. You, dear, colleagues, are the forerunners in the fight for "the Beautiful, the Great and the True", to give our children the resources to start their own journey in life and become the ideal ambassadors of the Greek Spirit in their own society.”
