NEW YORK – The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, through its National and Direct Archdiocesan District departments of Education, organizes a program of celebration to mark the Feast of the Three Hierarchs, and the Day of Greek Letters.
On Friday, Jan. 29, at 9:00 a.m., His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America will officiate at the Archieratical Divine Liturgy for the Feast of the Three Hierarchs – Saint Basil the Great, Saint Gregory the Theologian, and Saint John Chrysostom at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Manhattan. This Divine Liturgy is traditionally attended by the students, teachers, principals and parents and of the New York City parochial day schools of the Archdiocese. His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios will address the students on the life and works of the Three Hierarchs emphasizing the importance of our Greek Orthodox faith, the Greek Letters and the Hellenic heritage. A reception will follow in the adjacent Cathedral Ballroom, during which the Archbishop will cut the Vasilopita for students, teachers and administrators.
On Saturday, Jan. 30, at 5:00 p.m., a special celebration that is entirely devoted to the students of the Greek American day and afternoon schools will take place at the Holy Trinity Cathedral Community Center in Manhattan. Archbishop Demetrios of America, will present the Three Hierarchs Award of Excellence to the students who excelled in the Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek last June. Fr. Stefanos Alexopoulos, PhD, Assistant Professor of Liturgical Studies and Sacramental Theology at Washington’s Catholic University, will speak on the question: “Are the Three Hierarchs relevant today?” A musical performance will follow by the Choir of the Saint Demetrios School of Astoria, under the direction of Choir Director, Vagelis Chaziroglou.
On Sunday, Jan. 31, at 5:00 p.m., Fr. Stefanos Alexopoulos, PhD,Assistant Professor of Liturgical Studies and Sacramental Theology at Washington’s Catholic University will offer a lecture with a focus on the contribution of the Three Hierarchs to the Liturgical life of the Church. It will be followed by a musical program offered by the students of the Schools of the NY area, including classical pieces and songs by renowned Greek composers.
