NEW YORK – The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America will co-sponsor two events at this year’s UN Commission on the Status of Women: 1) Forced Migration, Human Trafficking, and Child Soldiers: How ISIL is Exploiting the Conflict in the Middle East and 2) Women, Water, and Wellbeing: The Human Right to Water and Sanitation.
March 15, 2016–Forced Migration, Human Trafficking, and Child Soldiers: How ISIL is Exploiting the Conflict in the Middle East will address how ISIL’s exploitation of the current political and humanitarian instability in the Middle East and the negative impact this has on sustainable development in the region. The panel will primarily address the effects of ISIL’s actions on the local populations, specifically in terms of forced migration, human trafficking, and child soldiers. The event will take place from 12:30-2:00 PM in the Chapel of the Church Center for the United Nations (777 UN Plaza). No registration is necessary.
March 22, 2016–Women, Water, and Wellbeing: The Human Right to Water and Sanitation will address the intersection of the human right to water and sanitation, as well as water justice for women. The speakers will address the multifaceted nature of this vital resource and common good essential for life. In addition to perspectives from government, research, ethics, and practical humanitarian responses, the experiences and wisdom of women will be presented. The event will take place from 10:00-11:15 AM in Conference Room 11 of the United Nations Headquarters. You must register by March 17 if you wish to attend.
