Archbishop Demetrios Convenes First Meeting of HC/HC Presidential Search Committee

New York, NY - His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios convened the first meeting of the Search Committee to select the new president of Hellenic College/Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology on December 20th at the Archdiocesan Headquarters in New York City.

The Archbishop opened the meeting by presenting his comprehensive vision for the College and Theological School and then discussed in detail with the committee the criteria and credentials to be used in the selection process for the new president. His Eminence charged the Committee with a vision “imposed” on all of us by the Orthodox and Hellenic legacies of excellence, the multiple challenges of the contemporary world, the increased spiritual and intellectual demands on the clergy, and the desire and ability of the Greek Orthodox faithful to make essential contributions to American society. Search Committee Chairman George Behrakis also addressed the committee and emphasized the administrative, communications, budgetary and fund-raising, requirements of the prospective president.

The Search Committee, as it is known, was appointed by the Archbishop in accordance with the by-laws of HC/HC as follows: two trustees elected by Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees (George Behrakis and Dr. Constantine Papadakis); two members elected by the Corporate Board (Dr. Elias Gyftopoulos and Dr. Theoharis Theoharides); two faculty members elected by the respective faculties of Hellenic College (Dr. Aristotle Michopoulos) and Holy Cross (Rev. Dr. Theodore Stylianopoulos); and two members appointed by the Archbishop (Dr. Helen Hadjiyannakis Bender and Rev. Father Alexander Veronis). After the Search Committee completes its work and renders its recommendations, the final decision for a new president will be made by the Corporate Board, chaired by the Archbishop, and in consultation with the Holy Synod of the Archdiocese.

The next meeting of the Search Committee will be convened by the Chairman at HC/HC on January 14, 2000. Recommendations for the new president may be submitted to Mr. George Behrakis, Gainesborough Investments, 420 Bedford St., Suite110, Lexington, MA 02420 or HC/HC, 50 Goddard Avenue, Brookline, MA.
