The work of the Bible Society in Greece has a very old history, going back to before the Greek Revolution of 1821. However the Hellenic Bible Society itself formally came into existence as known to day in 1992, when they became separate, as an organization, from the British Bible Society. Since the year 2000, they are a full member of the United Bible Societies, which is made up of 146 national Bible Societies operating in over 200 countries and territories.

Together, with the other Bible Societies from around the world, they are the biggest translator, publisher and distributor of the Bible in the world. For many years now the Hellenic Bible Society has been steadily building a strong partnership with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and the American Bible Society.
