RENEWAL WEEK

May 16

Did you know that Renewal Week celebrates the Light of creation?

Renewal Week — also called “Bright Week” — is the week after Pascha (Easter), the celebration of the Resurrection of Christ. It is the first week of God’s “renewed” creation. “‘See, I am making all things new’” (Revelation 21:5). The entire week is considered one continuous feast day and is a fast-free week.

The week is called “Bright” because the resurrected Christ is the Light of “the new dawn” that shines upon the world covered in the darkness of sin and death (Luke 1:78). Christ is the Light that illumines and guides us to peace and salvation (Luke 1:79). “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).

The week is also a time of “Renewal” because the Resurrection is the new beginning of life. Christ, the Word of God that created the world and humanity, is the Light and Life that spiritually recreates all things. The Resurrection of Christ brings about the resurrection of fallen humanity — restoring the image and likeness of mankind and all of creation from the effects of Adam’s sin. “So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; look, new things have come into being!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
