The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America announces with appreciation and joy the creation of a special Reflection Area, named after our late Archbishop Iakovos, in the newly built National African-American History and Culture Museum in Washington, DC. This is made possible by the significant contribution of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation for two million dollars and the personal contribution of Andreas Dracopoulos the SNF’s Co-President, for one million. These grants were made in honor of Archbishop Iakovos’ leadership and legacy in the area of civil and human rights.

The Department of Inter-Orthodox, Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America announces the continuation of its Faith-based Diplomacy & Advocacy Initiative. The Initiative established a total of four (2 for 2015-2016 and 2 for 2016-2017) yearlong Archdiocesan fellowships at the United Nations. Fifty years ago, on December 7, 1965, after their historic meeting the previous year (Jerusalem 1964), Patriarch Athenagoras and Pope Paul VI declared their commitment to steer the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches onto a path of mutual understanding, reconciliation, and love. Together they agreed to “remove from memory and from the midst of the Church the sentences of excommunication” leveled against each other in 1054 and which have divided our two Churches for centuries.
