A Series of Video Reflections

Dean Fr. Eugen J. Pentiuc and the Holy Cross Faculty

Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology is launching the first fruits of The Scriptorium Initiative with a series of Lenten and Holy Week Reflections beginning on Sunday, February 26 involving the full faculty of Holy Cross. The series, organized by Dean Fr. Eugen J. Pentiuc and the Holy Cross Faculty, is entitled Journeying Together Through the Triodion, Holy Week, and Pascha.

On each Sunday of the Triodion period and each day of Holy Week—culminating with Holy Saturday and Pascha/Easter Sunday—Holy Cross faculty members will offer their reflections associated with the main events and personalities commemorated on these days. On Good Friday, Dean Fr. Eugen J. Pentiuc will interview the renown theologian and popular speaker Fr. John Behr, Regis Professor of Humanities and Chair of the Divinity Department at the University of Aberdeen. Fr. Behr will talk about the earliest steps in configuring the Passion of Christ and Pascha.

Dean Pentiuc noted, “This series of Lenten reflections is an effective way of sharing the expertise and collegiality of the faculty of Holy Cross as well as an expedient means to bring the word of God wrapped in liturgical garments to the hedges and highways of Orthodoxy here and around the world.” This Series of Holy Cross Faculty Videos is an initial offering from The Scriptorium Initiative. In October 2023, Lilly Endowment granted $1.125 million to Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology for the proposal The Scriptorium: Preaching and Teaching the Word of God in a Digital Age as part of the Lilly Endowment’s Compelling Preaching Initiative.

The aim of The Scriptorium Initiative is to improve and enhance preaching within Orthodox communities as well as identify and employ new ways of disseminating the Gospel message to Orthodox faithful and seekers of truth around the world. This massive and substantial offering by Holy Cross Faculty extends beyond the confines of the seminary. It is currently in its initial phase of designing and developing a robust website to host a wide variety of educational podcasts and webinars created by the faculty for clergy and lay leaders of Orthodox parishes.
