11/03/2001 Topic: Medicine for Life: Canons of the Church

Guest: Rev. Dr. Patrick Viscuso

The Reverend Dr. Patrick Viscuso is a priest of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese and a canonist specializing in marriage and gender issues. His doctorate in historical theology from The Catholic University of American concentrated on Byzantine and Oriental canon law, patristic studies, and church history. He also holds a Master of Divinity from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology and a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University. Fr. Viscuso is the author of a large number of scholarly publications in the field of Late Byzantine Canon Law and is a specialist in marriage legislation and theology. His most recent writings focus on the relationship of marriage to ordination, purity issues, divorce, and women's superstitions in late Byzantium.

Guest: V. Rev. Dr. Joseph Purpura

A clergyman of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America since 1977, Fr. Pupura serves as Director of the Department of youth for the Antiochian Archdiocese. He received his Bachelor of Arts (B. A.), degree Cum Laude Philosophy from Iona College, New Rochelle, NY; his Master of Divinity (M. Div.) from St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary, Crestwood, NY; his Master of Sacred Theology (S.T.M.) with an emphasis in Pastoral Counseling from Yale University, New Haven, CT; and his Doctor of Theology (Th. D.) with an emphasis in Youth Ministry from Pittsburgh Theological, Pittsburgh, PA.

11/17/2001 Topic: Faith and the Divine Liturgy
Guest: Rev. Dr. Alkiviades Calivas

Fr. Calivas will discuss the relationship of faith and the Divine Liturgy how worship builds and transmits faith. "The work of the Church is in fact the faith of the church in motion. It is seen in four fundamental activities: preaching the Word, teaching the Word, making the faith applicable, worship."

Fr. Calivas, a Professor at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology where he teaches required and elective courses in liturgics and in liturgical and sacramental Theology, has been exploring a range of issues related to the sacraments and to liturgical renewal and reform. He has studied the origins and the development of Holy Week and the history of the Church's liturgical books. He is presently preparing to publish two small volumes on Theology and Mission and on Spiritual Worship - Essays on Liturgical Themes.
