National Philoptochos Philanthropy Exceeds $2 Million

For over 85 years, Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society stewards have demonstrated their commitment to charity through the Ministry Commitments of the Society, as well as special projects. In 2016, disbursements totaled $2,057,690, surpassing all previous years.

This figure does not include hundreds of thousands of dollars that were donated directly by metropolises and chapters across the country to their local philanthropic ministries and projects.

Following is a listing of the National Philoptochos Ministry Commitments/Programs and Special Collections, along with the programs and organizations that were benefited: 

  • Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine: $700,000 to the building fund
  • Saint Basil Academy Vasilopita Sisterhood Fund: $400,000 for operating expenses; $35,755 for the children’s physical needs, including purchase of a mini van
  • Hellenic College Holy Cross Scholarship Fund: $75,700 for scholarships and special merit awards
  • HCHC Lenten Appeal Fundraiser: $75,000 for operating expenses to refurbish nine classrooms, the Archbishop Iakovos Library reading room, and the Learning Resource Center
  • Aid to Greece and Cyprus: $80,000 (Greece: $50,000, Cyprus: $30,000)
  • Archdiocesan Presbyters Council/National Sisterhood of Presvyteres Benevolent Fund: $32,000 to assist clergy and their families in need
  • Autism Assistance Fund: $27,800 for research, training and social programs
  • Cancer Fund: $58,318 to assist individuals
  • Children’s Medical Fund 2015:$14,841 to assist individuals
  • Ecumenical Patriarchate: $125,000 for patriarchal ministries
  • General Medical Fund $17,623 for programs to benefit individuals and for direct assistance to individuals
  • International Orthodox Christian Charities: $35,000 for Women’s Sustainable Agricultural Project in the West Bank and Water Emergency Project in Gaza
  • Orthodox Christian Mission Center: $24,400 for women’s mission trip to Kenya and Albania
  • Orthodox Christian Fellowship: $22,500 for OCF Summer Leadership Institute to train student leaders
  • Retired Clergy and Widowed Presvyteres Benevolent Fund: $20,000 general donation
  • St. Photios Shrine: $29,000 general donation and support for Greek Landing Day and Pilgrimage Sponsorship
  • 75th Anniversary Founders Fund: $25,668 to assist individuals
  • Social Services: $72,085 to assist individuals
  • Support a Mission Priest (SAMP): $32,000 to benefit mission priests and a general donation
  • UNICEF: $50,000 to US Fund for Children First
  • National Philoptochos Emergency Fund: $105,000 ($25,000 to the IOCC for Hurricane
  • Matthew Relief Fund; $25,000 to the IOCC for Aid to West Virginia; $35,000 to the Metropolis of Atlanta for Aid to Baton Rouge, La., floods; $20,000 to Ionian Village Relief Fund)
