St. Nicholas National Shrine - Monthly Newsletter - October 2022

St. Nicholas National Shrine - Monthly Newsletter - October 2022

From the first days after the horrific attacks on 9/11, there was mournful dread about the ashes that littered downtown New York, as if all joy in the world had been reduced to rubble with the destruction of the Twin Towers. The loss of life was so horrendous, as it says in the Book of Lamentations, that the entire Nation and the world sat in silence, dust and ashes covered our heads; we were girt with the sackcloth of grief, and our heads were bowed to the ground (Lamentations 2:10). Friends of St. Nicholas February 2022 Newsletter

Friends of St. Nicholas February 2022 Newsletter

At the beginning of this month of February, we remembered in the Church the person and ministry of Saint Photios the Great, Patriarch of Constantinople (d. February 6, 891 AD). This brilliant Ecumenical Patriarch is famous for a multitude of reasons, but the one I want to highlight, vis-à-vis our National Shrine, is his commitment to spreading the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. His missionary zeal was truly apostolic, not a proselytizing chauvinism. And it is this spirit that our Saint Nicholas National Shrine will invoke for all who cross its holy threshold. Read More

NCC - New and Emerging Faith Voices on Ending Racism Town Hall

The road from slavery to freedom, to justice and ending racism has been paved with progress and setbacks. Jim Crow created two seperate and unequal societies during the first half of the 20th century. Then the actions of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s confronted these systems directly, resulting in landmark legislation that bent the arc of the moral universe every closer towards justice. Again today we are faced with a moment of clarity, when the increased visibility of police shootings of people of color and the disproportionate impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have laid bare the inequities that remain. As it was in the 1960s, it is today's new and emerging voices that will be the ones that carry the movement forward to realize the results of current activism. Hearing from these voices is essential for those seeking to partner in this important work. A webinar hosted by the National Council of Churches.
