BRONX, N.Y. – With the meeting of the Holy and Great Council of Crete in June 2016, this has been a historic year for the Orthodox Church.
Fordham’s Orthodox Christian Studies Center played a significant role in the conversation leading up to and surrounding the Council. In October 2014, the Center convened a group of Orthodox scholars from across the country to discuss the themes, promises, and challenges of the Council. One of the initiatives stemming from this meeting was the June 2015 Conference in Preparation for the Holy and Great Council hosted by the Center.
The Center celebrated its own milestone last fall with the establishment of its second endowed professorship. In October 2015, George E. Demacopoulos was installed as the inaugural holder of the Fr. John Meyendorff & Patterson Family Chair of Orthodox Christian Studies. The chair celebrates the deep faith of Solon and Marianna Patterson and honors the legacy of the late Fr. Meyendorff, a pioneer of Orthodox Christian Studies and a professor of Byzantine history at Fordham.
In keeping with that pioneering spirit, Fordham is now the first and only research university to boast two senior professorships in Orthodox Christian Studies.
