NEW YORK – A special event within the annual celebrations for the Three Hierarchs and the Day of Greek Letters is the Three Hierarchs Award of Excellence Ceremony, which took place Sunday Jan. 28, 2018 at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.

His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America awarded the Three Hierarchs Award of Excellence to 65 students of the Greek American day and afternoon schools who excelled in the Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek, known as Greek Regents last June. (https://www.goarch.org/en/departments/education) Addressing the audience, the Archbishop expressed his gratitude to the priests, teachers and parents for their devotion to preserving the Greek language, and our Orthodox faith.

Mrs. Athena Kromidas, principal of the “William Spyropoulos” Greek-American Day School of St. Nicholas, Flushing, was the keynote speaker. She referred to the humble and difficult life of the Three Hierarchs - St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory the Theologian and St. John Chrysostom - and their holy life work that shaped Christianity. She emphasized their contribution to the cultivation of Greek Letters and the Hellenic-Christian civilization.

On the feast-day of the Three Hierarchs, Jan. 30, 2018, Archbishop Demetrios celebrated a special Divine Liturgy for the students of the Archdiocesan Schools and immediately afterwards hosted a “vassilopita cutting” reception for educators, administrators, parents and students.
