Remarks of Archbishop Elpidophoros at Philoptochos Affirmation of Office

His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America

Archdiocese District Philoptochos Affirmation of Office

Archdiocesan Headquarters

December 20, 2021

My dear sisters in Christ,

I am delighted that you have come to our Archdiocesan Headquarters today, so that we may fulfill your installation as officers and members of the District Philoptochos Board. Time and time again, you have all demonstrated your steadfast commitment to the ideals of Philoptochos. Furthermore, you have shown a righteous and well-balanced zeal for the dedicated work of this all-important Sisterhood for our region.

The various ministries of Philoptochos are constant and truly never-ending. As you all know, we are not clear of the pandemic yet. And the cost to our communities continues mount up. Nevertheless, your ministry continued to help alleviate the suffering of both individuals and communities. And for this you are to be heartily commended.

But you provide even more, because the very nature of your service gives to your devoted members opportunities for spiritual growth and great emotional satisfaction. We all know that in difficult and constraining circumstances, sometimes we just want to be able to make a difference. And Philoptochos provides this essential outlet for the altruistic and charitable aspirations of thousands of our sisters across the Archdiocesan District.

I have noted before, and I do so again – your devotion to our Archdiocese and its ministries. I particularly admire the program, “Beacons of Hope;” for it sustains the future clergy of our Church in America, as they complete their theological studies. Ask any parish priest to point to his strongest ally in the ministry, and you will see him identify Philoptochos as his right hand. One day, I would like to see the number of priests whose expenses and even tuition were covered by the local Philoptochos chapters. I am sure it would surprise everyone except you – because you have always understood the mission to educate our priests.

Therefore, in commending you once more, I express my gratitude to you as well for your willingness to be of such service. Philoptochos is truly the exemplification of genuine and authentic  philanthropy.

May God bless all of you, and grant unto you and your dear families a glorious celebration of the Nativity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. A very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year of 2022 to you all!
