Eparchial Synod to Convene Final Review of Proposed Charter Revisions

New York, NY - The Holy Eparchial Synod of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America convened on Tuesday, April 11th, in a session dedicated to further study of the proposed revision to the Charter of the Archdiocese.

As is known, the proposed text was drafted by a special Charter Committee comprised of three members of the Eparchial Synod, two clergy and three laypersons, representing the clergy, the Archdiocesan Council and the theological academic world.

This committee met on three occasions for lengthy discussions and produced a proposed draft for review by the Holy Eparchial Synod. The Synod thoroughly studied the proposed draft at three subsequent meetings.

In accordance with a recommendation passed by the delegates to the 1998 Orlando Clergy – Laity Congress, that the review of the Charter include one priest and one layperson from each Diocese, appointed by its hierarch, the Synod determined to convene a special meeting for this purpose with the participation of these representatives, after Pascha. This meeting will engage in a final review of the proposed text before it is submitted to the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
