Archbishop Demetrios Visits Cyprus, Receives the Medal of St. Barnabas

LEFKOSIA, Cyprus – His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America is making a visit to Cyprus following an invitation from the Church of Cyprus and its Primate, His Beatitude Archbishop Chrysostomos.

On Sunday Feb. 11, His Eminence concelebrated the Divine Liturgy with Archbishop Chrysostomos and other hierarchs of the Church of Cyprus at the church of God’s Wisdom (Saint Sophia), in in the suburb of Strovolos.

Archbishop Demetrios is accompanied by His Eminence Metropolitan Savas of Pittsburgh and Archdeacon Panteleimon Papadopoulos. Kyriacos Papastylianou, the President of the Federation of Cypriot American Organizations is also part of the delegation.

Later on Sunday, the Church of Cyprus bestowed on Archbishop Demetrios its highest honor, the Gold Medal of Saint Barnabas, the founder of the Church of Cyprus. Present at the ceremony were the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, the First Lady Andri Anastasiades and many leaders of the political and academic sectors.

Today, Feb. 12, the Archbishop visited the Pancyprian Gymnasium, the renowned high school in the capital, Lefkosia and later spoke to a gathering of school principals.

Tomorrow, His Eminence is expected to meet with the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades. In the evening, the Archbishop will deliver a lecture at the Theological School of the Church of Cyprus on the topic:  “Modern Theological Challenges and Opportunities.”
