The people of Israel, even after being led out of slavery in Egypt, found it difficult to remain loyal in their worship of God. In the Book of Exodus we read that while Moses was receiving the tables of the Law on Mount Sinai, the Israelites grew impatient and constructed a golden calf which they worshiped and to which they offered sacrifices.
