Creative Expression and Research Contest 

“The Portrayal of the Greek Revolution of 1821 in the American Press/Media, Literature, and Culture During that Period.” 

Presented by: 

The High Council for Greek Education of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America 

 

Objective: 

This contest aims to encourage students to explore the portrayal of the Greek Revolution in America during 1821. Students will be researching the theme using literature, music and art of the times through: 

• American literature selections 

• Newspaper and/or magazine articles 

• American philhellenes and their contributions to the cause of the Greek Independence 

• Historical events and historical figures as they relate to the theme 

 

Evaluation: 

Creative works will be evaluated on the ability to demonstrate: 

• Critical thinking 

• Synthesis of information relevant to the theme 

• Organization of material 

• Originality 

 

Submission Instructions 

• Creative works will be submitted electronically 

[email protected] • Deadline for all submissions is March 14, 2021 

• Students can submit their own work or have their school submit it for them. 

• The contest is open to both languages (English and Greek).

 

Contest Categories 

1. Artistic Expression Category (Grades 7-9) 

Topic: Greek Revolution of 1821 and its influence on the American Culture 

• Participants can submit an original script for film or theater, original music, or  original artwork 

• Individual or Group submissions 

 

2. Essay Category (Grades 10-12) 

Topic: The American Philhellenes of the Greek Revolution of 1821 

• Participants can submit an original script for film or theater, or 

 research paper. All papers will be processed through TURNITIN. 

• Individual or Group submissions 

 

3. Essay Category (College) Students must be enrolled in a US college or university 

Topic: The Greek Revolution of 1821 in the America press and literature.

 • Research paper (5 pages including the reference page) 

All papers will be processed through TURNITIN. 

Awards 

• There will be a first, second and third prize winner in each category. 

• Each winner (or winning group) will receive a monetary award: 

1st Place $500 

2nd Place $300 

3rd Place $200 

Honorable Mention $100 

• All participants will receive a certificate of participation.
