Island Park, NY (Long Island) – His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America, on Sunday before the Feast of the Dormition, August 12, 2018, presided at the Divine Liturgy in the Greek Orthodox Church of Kimisis tis Theotokou (Panagia) of Island Park on the south shore of central Long Island.
The Archbishop was assisted by the parish priest Fr. John Paizis, Archdeacon Panteleimon Papadopoulos and Deacon Eleftherios Constantine.
His Eminence in his sermon spoke about the example of Theotokos, the Mother of God for all faithful christians, He said that “Panagia is the protector and defender for all who call upon her but she is also an example of faith demonstrated at all times in her life.” The Archbishop said that this example should be a guide for our lives in times of pain, oppression and injustice, and he concluded: “Panagia Theotokos is the most holy because she is the model of faith, holiness and purity for all of us.”
At the conclusion, Fr. John Paizis, on behalf of the parish, presented the Archbishop with a set of silver dikerotrikera, archieratical candlesticks.
Following the Divine Liturgy, the parish with its president George Nikias and the ladies of the Philoptochos Society offered a lenten luncheon for all. The parish celebrates the feast of their church, The Dormition of Theotokos August 15 followed by their festival to last through this coming weekend.
