SAN ANTONIO – Fr. John A. Mangos, 84, a priest with a lay profession, died Dec. 25.

In addition to serving as assistant priest at St. Sophia Church in San Antonio, he was chairman of pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

Born Sept. 19, 1932 in Thessaloniki, he attended public school there and studied at the medical school of the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, receiving his M.D. in pediatrics tin 1956.

He married Rae Mathewson of Milwaukee (now deceased) in December 1964.

After relocating to the United States, they settled in the Chicago area. He was ordained to the diaconate at Sts. Constantine and Helen in Chicago in May 1973, and to the priesthood at Assumption Church in Madison, Wis., in July 1973 by Bishop Timotheos of Rodostolon.

He served as part-time priest at Assumption Church in Madison until June 1975, and at the Greek Orthodox Community in Gainesville, Fla., until August 1982 when he was then assigned to San Antonio.

Survivors include daughters, June Maria Matthews and husband, Patrick; Marianna Gardea and husband, Anthony; Elena Umbel and husband, David; and Yanna Goodwin and husband Christopher, and 12 grandchildren.

In addition to his presvytera, he was predeceased by a grandson.

Funeral services took place Dec. 28 at St. Sophia Church.
