The Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese established Institutional Chaplaincy to facilitate care for Orthodox Christians in various institutions. The Institutional Chaplains who are clergy are under the omophorion of the local Presiding Hierarch, provide the Holy Mysteries to Orthodox Christians, and offer a witness of the Orthodox Faith to everyone.
The Institutional Chaplains who are laypersons function in a non-sacramental capacity only. They are employed as Chaplains in local hospital, prisons, hospice, or universities, providing care for people by praying, counseling, advising, reading Scriptures, and teaching the Christian Faith.
The requirements for a layperson to be endorsed by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America include:
- Application form for Institutional Chaplaincy
- Master of Divinity degree from Holy Cross School of Theology
- Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) – 1600 total hours
- Autobiography
- Resume
- Letter of recommendation from the presiding priest of the local parish
- Letter of approval from the local Hierarch.
Having completed the requirements, the Institutional Chaplaincy Endorsing Agent of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese will issue the endorsement to work as a Chaplain in a specific institution. The Chaplain will be an employee of the institution and not of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
