Gioles and Malta Scholarship Recipients Announced - $35,500 Awarded for 2006-07 Academic Year

New York, NY - The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America has announced the recipients of 2006-07 scholarship awards from both the George and Naouma Gioles and the Katina John Malta Scholarship Programs.

Through the George and Naouma Gioles Scholarship Program, 5 scholarships totaling $7,500 were awarded for the 2006-07 academic year. The awards were given to the following students: Donna Balaouras of Watertown, MA; Ypapanti Meris of Campbell, OH; Efthimia Mitches of Garrison, NY; Anastasia Eftihia Leventopoulos of Chicago, IL; and Alexis Umowski of Town of Washington, NJ. The Gioles Scholarship Fund was established in 1997 with a generous gift in memory of George and Naouma Gioles. At least three scholarships are awarded on an annual basis to Greek Orthodox high school seniors or college students who are committed to serious study in a degree-earning undergraduate program at an accredited college or university.

The Katina John Malta Scholarship Program offered a total of $28,000 in awards given to the following 13 students: Vasilike Bakogiannis of Plainview, NY (Greek Orthodox Archdiocese); Amanda Marie Georgantas of Shorewood, IL (Greek Orthodox Archdiocese); James Elias Georgantas of Shorewood, IL (Greek Orthodox Archdiocese); William Michael George of Denville, NJ (American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese in the U.S.A.); Anastasia Eftihia Leventopoulos of Chicago, IL (Greek Orthodox Archdiocese); Taryn Faye Lyman, Fort Wayne, IN (Greek Orthodox Archdiocese); Julia Matthews of Kingsburg, CA (Serbian Orthodox Church in the United States and Canada); Alexandra Petrelis of Campbell, OH (Greek Orthodox Archdiocese); Stephen N. Popovich of Hebron, IN (Serbian Orthodox Church in the United States and Canada); Christopher Shadid of Johnstown, PA (Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America); Emily Mae Tjuanakis of Claremont, CA (Orthodox Church in America); Jason J. Varounis of Port Orange, FL (Greek Orthodox Archdiocese); Emmanuel Vozos of Union, NJ (Greek Orthodox Archdiocese). These students were selected by the Scholarship Committee from the numerous applications received by the Archdiocese. The Katina John Malta Scholarship Fund is a scholarship program established in 2002 by means of a generous gift from the estate of Katina John Malta. The donation and the formation of the scholarship program has been done in recognition of the love Katina had for the Church and in honor of the desire she had to help others, especially children and youth. The program awards at least two scholarships of $2000 each academic year. The program is open to all Orthodox students of the jurisdictions of the Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas (SCOBA).

Applications and guidelines for the 2007-08 academic year will be made available by January 1, 2007 from the Office of the Chancellor, Scholarship Office, 10 East 79th Street, New York, NY 10021, with an application deadline of April 15, 2007.
