Father John Chryssavgis, the internationally renowned theologian who serves as Theological Advisor to His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, will offer the annual Washington Theological Consortium Lecture on Thursday, February 23, 2023, at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

 

Father John is this year’s recipient of the Washington Theological Consortium’s Ecumenism Award. His lecture is entitled “Toward an Ecumenical Outlook: Reviving Foundational Principles of Ecumenism.” In it, Father John will offer a fresh look at the direction of ecumenism and ecumenical relations, especially as perceived through the lens of three prominent Orthodox theologians: His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Archbishop Stylianos of Australia, and Prof. Nikos Nissiotis. Father John will also offer a critical and challenging overview of ecumenism and its impact in our time and in our world, particularly in light of the recent pandemic and the current war in Ukraine. Finally, the lecture will propose vital contemporary issues, notably creation care, as an effective and productive focus of the ecumenical movement.

 

Father John Chryssavgis has degrees from the University of Athens, the Greek Conservatory of Music, and from Oxford. His work and writings have focused on medieval theology, as well as on the history of the Eastern Church. His interests have embraced the areas of ascetic thought, spirituality, ecology, and liturgy. He has served as a professor at St. Andrews Theological College and the University of Sydney in Australia, Holy Cross and Hellenic College in the U.S., and the University of Balamand in Lebanon. He has published numerous articles and books, including John Climacus: From the Egyptian Desert to the Sinaite Mountain (Ashgate, UK, Winter 2004); and Light Through Darkness: Insights into Orthodox Spirituality (Orbis Books, Summer 2004).

 

The event, which is the Washington Theological Consortium’s Figel Event for Ecumenism, will be held in the Caldwell Auditorium of Catholic University of America from 7:00pm to 9:00 pm.
