CELEBRATING GREEK INDEPENDENCE WEEK 2023
THE GREEK NATIONALITY ROOM OF THE NATIONALITY ROOMS PROGRAM
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH PRESENTS
"THE TEACHERS OF THE GREEK PEOPLES:
THE LESSER-KNOWN HEROES OF THE GREEK STRUGGLE FOR INDEPENDENCE"
Within the first 100 years following the fall of Constantinople, many of the teachers of the geography inside which Greek people lived, fled to the west, north, and east (Venice, Pisa, Trieste, Marseille, Nice, Costanza, Odessa, Kyiv, Mariupol, Stavrupol). Greece was largely orphaned of education opportunities. Together with the church clergy, the cadre of the few remaining teachers began the monumental task of rebuilding the education of the Greek people.
By the start of the Revolution, this cadre of the Teachers of the People swelled to more than 1000 lesser-known educators-heroes whose role in the Greek peoples’ struggle for Independence is just beginning to be discovered.
This year, the Greek Nationality Room Committee will commemorate the lesser-known Teachers of the People inside the following virtual program that will take place between March 25th - March 29th, 2023.
This event is organized by the University of Pittsburgh National Rooms and Intercultural Exchange Programs, American Hellenic Federation of Western Pennsylvania, European Center of Greece, Greek Orthodox Archdiocese Department of Greek Education.
