Archbishop Demetrios of America to Participate in Events Commemorating Fifth Anniversary of September 11, 2001

New York, NY - His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America will celebrate the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, Sept.10 at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (319 E. 74th St.) beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Liturgy will be followed by a Memorial Service for the victims of September 11, 2001.

Attending the service will be families of victims from throughout the Greater New York area and members of the diplomatic corps of Greece and Cyprus.

Later that afternoon, President George Bush has invited Archbishop Demetrios and other religious leaders to join in a White House Service of Remembrance for September 11th at St. Paul’s Chapel at Ground Zero.

Monday morning, September 11 at 8:30 a.m. Archbishop Demetrios will join Gov. George Pataki, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other dignitaries at the annual commemoration of the reading of the victims’ names at Ground Zero. He will then proceed to the Fire Museum to view the “Faces of Ground Zero, Portraits of the Heroes of 9/11” exhibit by Joe McNally.

Archbishop Demetrios will then proceed to the site of the destroyed St. Nicholas Church, for a Trisaghion (Memorial Service) for the victims’ families and survivors. At 6:00 p.m. the Archbishop will participate in an Interfaith Memorial Service at St. Paul’s Chapel at Ground Zero.
