A Book Just in Time for Forgiveness Sunday Available on Orthodox Marketplace
The book Love Your Enemies explains how Christ has revealed a way to obtain the absolution of our sins, no matter how great the offense: by forgiving with all our heart those who have wronged us and loving them without regard to what they have done.
Forgiveness Sunday is the last Sunday before Great and Holy Lent, and it is a time of spiritual purification that helps faithful get ready for the Lenten journey, which starts the next day. It is customary for Orthodox Christians to ask for forgiveness from one another on this day for our mistakes in loving our neighbor as ourselves. The expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden is the focal point of the Sunday of Forgiveness because it reminds us how far we have distanced ourselves from God. It also reminds us of our need for God’s Forgiveness and helps us focus on our repentance and journey back to Paradise.
We remember that our Lenten prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are not as beneficial without first making amends with one another. Following the dismissal at Vespers, the priest stands before the congregation, and the faithful approach one at a time to venerate the icon of Christ. Then, a line is formed where every person bows to one another, asking for forgiveness.
Love Your Enemies is a great resource to help prepare you for Forgiveness Sunday, which is on Sunday, February 26th, 2023.
