September 8, 2004
Feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos

To the Reverend Clergy of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America:

I am writing to you on behalf of His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios on the occasion of the three-year memorial of the terrorist attack upon our nation on September 11, 2001, to ask that all clergy of our Holy Archdiocese conduct a special Memorial Service following the Divine Liturgy of Sunday, September 12, 2004 in remembrance of the innocent victims of the attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C., and for those who lost their lives heroically attempting to save the lives of others.

Unless you have received instructions from your local Hierarch regarding special petitions, you are asked to use the following:

Again we pray for the families of the victims of the terrorist attack of September 11th, that they may be granted help and strength from above, and for those wounded by this unjust attack, for their salvation and the complete restoration of their health.

Further we pray for an end to all acts of terrorism and for the establishment of peace in our world.

During the Memorial Service:

Again we pray for the blessed memory and eternal repose of the souls of the innocent victims of the barbaric attack of September 11th, of those who unjustly lost their lives, and of those who heroically fell in the line of duty attempting to help these victims.

As our communities and families in parishes throughout America gather in worship on this day, and as you offer consolation and care to those among you who are in need, please be assured of the continued prayers of His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios for your valued ministry to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and His Holy Church. May our Almighty God be with all of you, and may He grant you, your families, and your communities His abiding peace.

With prayers and love in Christ,

Bishop of Troas
Chancellor of the Archdiocese of America
