Forefeast of the Elevation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross

To the Reverend Clergy of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America:

In response to the tragic events of Tuesday, September 11th, which inflicted unspeakable sorrow and loss upon our entire nation, President George W. Bush has declared Friday, September 14th, the Feast of the Universal Elevation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross, a National Day of Prayer. In addition, at the direction of His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America, the clergy of our Holy Archdiocese are asked to conduct a special Memorial Service following the Divine Liturgy of Sunday, September 16th. This service will be for the remembrance of the many innocent victims of the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C., and for those who lost their lives heroically attempting to save others.

Some of you have already received instructions from your local Hierarchs regarding services for this day. For all others, the two petitions below are offered. The first should be used in the Memorial Service, and the second, for bereaved families and communities, may be used at appropriate places in the Divine Liturgy and other services of the day.

  • Again we pray for the blessed memory and eternal repose of the souls of the innocent victims of the barbaric attack of September 11th, of those who unjustly lost their lives, and of those who heroically fell in the line of duty attempting to help these victims.

  • Again we pray for the families of the victims of the terrorist attack of September 11th, that they may be granted help and strength from above, and for those wounded by this unjust attack, for their salvation and the complete restoration of their health.

In addition, all parishes are asked to have special collections, particularly on this Sunday, to assist with the tremendous needs that are escalating daily. These offerings should be sent to the Archdiocese and designated for the September 11th Disaster Relief Fund.

Traditionally, on the Sunday following the Feast of the Cross, our communities pass a special tray for our beloved Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. Parishes are asked to postpone such collections until Sunday, September 23rd.

Your brother in Christ,

Archimandrite Savas Zembillas
