Preparation consists of examination of our conscience, ; repentance from sin, prayer and fasting from midnight on ; Saturday until receiving the Holy Eucharist on Sunday morning. ; If one is married, one must have had their marriage celebrated; in the Orthodox Church to receive Holy Communion. If one's ; marriage has ended in a divorce, then one must have received ; an ecclesiastical divorce to receive Holy Communion. ; If one has committed a "grave sin" (adultery/fornication or ; apostasy/fallen away from the Church for a period of time), then ; one should receive the Sacrament of Holy Confession before; receiving the Holy Eucharist. Those who are living together; as couples outside of marriage are not to approach; the Holy Chalice. All of us are to approach the Holy; Chalice with pure hearts, with an awesome respect for God, ; revealed in our daily struggle to live according to His ; Commandments and the Teachings of our Church. ; And, we are to receive Holy Communion with the commitment ; in our hearts to live in Christ-like love with all people. ; When we receive Holy Communion in this manner, it leads ; to our spiritual benefit. When we receive Holy Communion ; without preparation, or without living according to Christ's ; teachings, we receive it to our condemnation. |
