Preparation consists of examination of our conscience, repentance from sin, prayer and fasting from midnight on Saturday until receiving the Holy Eucharist on Sunday morning. If one is married, one must have had their marriage celebrated in the Orthodox Church to receive Holy Communion. If one's marriage has ended in a divorce, then one must have received an ecclesiastical divorce to receive Holy Communion. If one has committed a "grave sin" (adultery/fornication or apostasy/fallen away from the Church for a period of time), then one should receive the Sacrament of Holy Confession before receiving the Holy Eucharist. Those who are living together as couples outside of marriage are not to approach the Holy Chalice. All of us are to approach the Holy Chalice with pure hearts, with an awesome respect for God, revealed in our daily struggle to live according to His Commandments and the Teachings of our Church. And, we are to receive Holy Communion with the commitment in our hearts to live in Christ-like love with all people. When we receive Holy Communion in this manner, it leads to our spiritual benefit. When we receive Holy Communion without preparation, or without living according to Christ's teachings, we receive it to our condemnation.
