Annual Teachers Professional Development Seminar of the Direct Archdiocesan District (November 8, 2011)

NEW YORK – The Annual Staff-Development Seminar of the Direct Archdiocesan District will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 (Election Day), at the High School of St. Demetrios Cathedral in Astoria.
The Seminar is held under the auspices of His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America and aims at offering in-service training to the teachers serving in the parochial day and afternoon schools of the Direct Archdiocesan District as well as the surrounding areas. It will include an array of workshops and presentations for both the English and Greek programs of the schools. (See attached workshop schedule.)
Invited by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, Dr. Christos Tsolakis, professor emeritus of the Paedagogical School/Department of Elementary Education/The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki will address the Greek teachers on “LANGUAGE, PAIDEIA, & TEACHING.”
The Seminar will start with a keynote address by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios at 9:00 a.m. in the auditorium “P. Patrides” of St. Demetrios High School. Registrations will start at 8:00 a.m. and participants are urged to come as early as possible to register and get their seats.
The Board of the NYC parochial day school principals has designated November 8th (Election Day) as “professional development day,” and the day schools will remain closed to facilitate their teachers to attend. The principals of the District’s afternoon Greek schools are advised to act in a similar fashion so that the afternoon school teachers be able to attend as well.

Professor Dr. Christos Tsolakis
Dr. Tsolakis is a renowned educator and writer of Greek grammar and other books for young students. He has taught and has been president of the Department of Elementary Education of the Aristotle University; vice-president of the Paedagogical Institute, Thessaloniki; president of Secondary Education for the Ministry of Education of Greece; and president of the Centre for Professional Development of Thessaloniki. And he has lectured extensively in Greece and abroad on the teaching of the Greek language.
Dr. Tsolakis is the editor of the magazine “Philologos,” a literary publication of the Association of the Graduates of the School of Philosophy of Aristotle University and the creator – in collaboration with the Municipality of Veria and the Aristotle University – of the “Museum of Education and Paideia” in Veria, northern Greece.
