NEW YORK – The 2014 Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek will be administered on Monday, June 23, from 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., according to an announcement from the Direct Archdiocesan District Office of Education.
Approximately 500 public and nonpublic school students will sit for the Examination this year at 16 designated test sites. The students come from 56 parish sustained – day and afternoon – schools, 4 public schools, and 1 charter school. The majority of students are from New York; while quite a number are from Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
The Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek is “a locally developed foreign language examination,” aligned to the Checkpoint B learning standards for Languages Other Than English (LOTE) as described in the Syllabus: Modern Languages for Communication of the New York State Education Department. It assesses student proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Modern Greek.
To qualify for the Examination, students must be in the eighth grade or higher and have successfully completed three years of studies in the Modern Greek language. Those who pass the Examination may be awarded up to three credits in foreign language studies at the discretion of the local high school principal. In the State of New York, students may qualify for a Regents diploma with advanced designation (CR 100.5(b)(7)(v)(c).
