Archdiocese Celebrates the Three Hierarchs and Greek Letters

NEW YORK – The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America will mark January 30th, the Feast of the Three Hierarchs St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory the Theologian and St. John Chrysostom and will celebrate the Day of Greek Letters with various events in Parishes and Metropolises around the country.
On the day of the feast, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America will officiate at the Divine Liturgy at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of Holy Trinity (319 East 74 Street) in Manhattan. The Liturgy is offered particularly for the administrators, teachers, and students of the New York City parochial day schools. His Eminence will address the students on the life and works of the Three Hierarchs and the importance of our Greek Orthodox heritage. A reception will follow in the adjacent Cathedral Center, and the Archbishop will cut the Vassilopita for the teachers and administrators.
That same evening Jan. 30 at 6:30 p.m., a panel discussion is organized at the same venue. The topic is The Three Hierarchs and the Social Issues of Their Times. The discussion will be moderated by Timothy Patitsas, Assistant Professor of Ethics, Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology and will include the following three panelists: Fr. Maximos (Monk of the Holy Monastery of Simonopetra, Mt. Athos, Greece) – visiting Professor at Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology; V. Rev. Dr. John McGuckin – Nielsen Professor of Early & Byzantine Church History, Union Theological Seminary, and Professor of Byzantine Christian Studies, Columbia University and V. Rev. Dr. John Behr – Professor of Patristics, Dean of St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary. A Reception will follow.
The first event for the celebration of Greek Letters will be held on Sunday January 27. Archbishop Demetrios will celebrate the Divine Liturgy at the Greek Orthodox Shrine Church of St. Nicholas, in Flushing, NY followed by the Opening and Dedication of the new Parish and School Library of the community.
On Saturday February 2, at 4:30 p.m., Archbishop Demetrios during a special Awards Ceremony, will present the Three Hierarchs Awards of Excellence to the students who excelled in the Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek in June 2012. The ceremony will take place inside the Cathedral of Holy Trinity (319 East 74 Street) in Manhattan. Mrs. Anne Prokop, principal of the Greek American Institute (GAI) of Zoodohos Peghe, Bronx, will address the honorees on the importance of Greek language learning. Following the Awards Ceremony, a festive reception will take place at the adjacent Cathedral Center where the GAI School Chorus will offer a musical performance and the Kimissis Tis Theotokou Young Dancers will perform Greek dances.
