Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to Meet with President Bush, Secy. of State Powell During Six-Day Visit to Washington, DC, Boston, and New York City, March 4-10

NEW YORK, NY – His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, 270th successor to the Apostle Andrew and spiritual leader of 300 million Orthodox Christians worldwide, will be visiting the United States from March 4-10 to join in commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and the 65th Anniversary of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology (Brookline, MA).

President George W. Bush has invited His All Holiness to meet with him in the White House on Tuesday, March 5th at 3:25 p.m. At 11:00 a.m. he will meet with Secretary of State Colin Powell at the State Department. In announcing the visit of the Ecumenical Patriarch, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America and Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, “The invitation of President Bush to His All Holiness is particularly significant as His All Holiness has, since the tragedy of September 11th, played a remarkable leadership role in attempting to curb conflicts fought in the name of religion.”

On December 19-20,2001, approximately 80 religious leaders representing Christianity, Judaism and Islam participated in an interfaith meeting, “The Peace of God in the World” organized by His All Holiness under the auspices of the European Commission and its president Romano Prodi. The following month on January 12th, 2002, His All Holiness celebrated a Divine Liturgy in Tehran, Iran and gave a lecture at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on “The Contribution of Religion to the Establishment of Peace in the Contemporary World.”

His All Holiness will visit Ground Zero, where he will preside at a Six-Month Memorial Service for those lost in the September 11th tragedy at the site of the destroyed St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, on Saturday March 9th at 1:00 p.m.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will arrive at Andrews Air Force Base, Washington, D. C. on March 4th at 4:00 p.m. and will be welcomed by Archbishop Demetrios, government and diplomatic officials, clergy and Greek Orthodox faithful from throughout the United States.
