Sevastiades Named Assistant Ecumenical OfficerHis Eminence Archbishop Spyridon announced yesterday that the Rev. Fr. Philemon Sevastiades will assume duties as the Assistant Ecumenical Officer of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.Fr. Philemon has assisted and been a consultant to the Ecumenical Office for more than four years, serving in many capacities and representating the Archdiocese at numerous Interfaith dialogues and other meetings, including the Ecumenical Patriarchates Environmental Conference at Halki last summer. Fr. Philemon has published books on various religions and is an editor of a number of religious reference books.Father Philemon was born in the United States and spent his childhood here and in Greece. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan in English Literature and Art.He worked thereafter in New York City in the arts and, for a time, in business. In the mid-eighties, he returned to graduate school and received an MA in Religion from Columbia University.He is working toward his Ph.D. at Columbia and has also studied at St.Vladimirs Seminary and Union Theological Seminary.Fr. Philemon served as a Deacon for more than three years in New York City. He was ordained to the Holy Priesthood in 1996 and is assigned as pastor of St. John the Baptist Church in Manhattan.He is married to Presbytera Patra Sevastiades who is the editorial director of Rosen Publishing.
