The Standing Conference of the Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas met for its pre-Lenten meeting on Wednesday, February 25, 1998 at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese headquarters in New York under the Chairmanship of His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon of America.

The Hierarchs in attendance were: Metropolitan Theodosius and Archbishop Peter of the Orthodox Church in America, Metropolitan Nicholas of Amissos of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Catholic Diocese in the U.S. A., Metropolitan Joseph of the Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Christopher of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the U.S. A. and Canada, Archbishop Antony of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the U.S. A., Protopresbyter Ilia Katre, Vicar General of the Albanian Orthodox Diocese in America. Unable to attend this meeting was Metropolitan Philip of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America.

The meeting was opened by prayer, the Apostolic Reading, and words of welcome by His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon.

Many issues were discussed and agreements reached regarding the future work and development of S.C.O.B.A. There was keen interest shown int he issue of inter-faith marriage, and ecumenical dialogues with Roman Catholics, Lutherans, and Anglicans.

It was agreed that the dialogues, under the auspices S.C.O.B.A., be reviewed and evaluated in view of current ecumenical trends. The Heirarchs of S.C.O.B.A. decided to give comprehensive direction and purpose to the various commissions, organizations and committees which have been created and endorsed by S.C.O.B.A.

Concern was expressed regarding the need to establish a committee of S.C.O.B.A. which will deal with contemporary and social issues resulting in the S.C.O.B.A. bishops issuing Archpastoral letters and guidelines. Furthermore, it was agreed by the body of Bishops to observe the millennium in a Pan- Orthodox manner.

The Financial Report was distributed by the Treasurer to the Member Hierarchs.

At the conclusion of the Meeeting, the members of S.C.O.B.A. expressed their solidarity and support to His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon, Chairman, for the good of the Orthodox Church in this country and the progress of Orthodox faithful everywhere.

His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon was requested to convey to His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew the greetings and spirit of fellowship and cooperation of all the Hierarchs present.
