For Immediate Release:

ARCHBISHOP SPYRIDON DECLARES UNITY OF CHURCH IN KEYNOTE TO ARCHDIOCESAN COUNCIL

New York,NY - His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America, in his keynote address to over 80 Archdiocesan Council delegates and 65 National Philoptochos Board members convened at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity March 6th and 7th, declared that:

“We are one Church! We are one body! We are one, united and indivisible Archdiocese of America! His Eminence continued that... “nothing that we will accomplish over the next two days will be more crucial, more significant, more decisive than this: to unequivocally declare the unalterable position and take an immovable stand for the unity of this Archdiocese and the solidarity of the Greek Orthodox people of America”

“ We have vital work and vital missions to undertake,” said the Archbishop, “and I can not and I shall not pull back from new and creative initiatives. We will go forward into the new millennium with ever-increasing and ever-expanding diakonia to every member of our Holy Archdiocese. We can not and shall not take one step backward as a Church, as an Archdiocese, as the faithful people of God! But boldly, with courage, conviction and a clear vision, we shall march on together into the 21st century as one Church.”

Responding to the challenge, the Archdiocesan Council unanimously approved the following resolution at the conclusion of deliberations on Saturday, March 7th: Resolved, that the Archdiocesan Council unequivocally and unanimously affirms the unity of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America as one, indivisible ecclesiastical entity, under one Archbishop with the Members of the Holy Synod, and all the clergy and lay members of the Church in all its manifestations, and calls all Greek Orthodox people in America to support, promote and defend this sacred unity.
