ARCHBISHOP SPYRIDON ANNOUNCES ESTABLISHMENT OF NEW SCHOLARSHIP FUND FOR THE PRIESTHOOD PLEDGES TO COMPLETE ARCHBISHOP IAKOVOS LIBRARY

New York,NY - His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America, has announced the establishment of a Scholarship Fund for the Priesthood and pledged his commitment to complete and endow the Archbishop Iakovos Library at Hellenic College/Holy Cross School of Theology at Brookline,MA.

In his keynote address at the Spring Meeting of the Archdiocesan Council on Friday, March 6th at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, His Eminence, in expressing his deep concern for seminarians at Holy Cross , many with families, who were forced to work long hours to support themselves, announced the establishment of a Scholarship Fund for the Priesthood. “We often hear and speak of vision,” said His is Eminence, “but I ask you, is there any greater vision for our Archdiocese than to endow the Priesthood into the new millennium. We could share no greater goal. We could share no greater vision.” The Archbishop announced that the Fund had already received over $200,000. This received an immediate reaction from several members of the Council with over $50,000 being pledged and a promise of more to come.

In closing, His Eminence reiterated his earlier commitment to complete the Archbishop Iakovos Library by asking, “ What educational resource could be more valuable to Holy Cross, than the Archbishop Iakovos Library ....I pledge to you, that as Archbishop, I will lead the way to raise the funds necessary to complete not only this essential component of our Seminary, but this worthy tribute to my revered predecessor. The Library can, shall and must be completed, furnished, and endowed. It is a matter of vision for the future, and the legacy of the past.”
