Archbishop Spyridon Convenes Commission on Greek Language and Culture

NEW YORK On Thursday, March 12, His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon convened for the first time the Commission on Greek Language and Culture. The Meeting was held at the Archdiocese headquarters in New York.

The opening session was led by His Eminence and chaired by Professor Rassias, president of The Rassias Foundation at Dartmouth College. The meeting was attended by 11 eminent members: James Alatis, Professor Emeritus of Linguistics and Modern Greek, Georgetown University; Peter Bien, Professor Emeritus of English, Dartmouth College; Honorary John Brademas, Professor Emeritus New York University; Effie P. Cochran, Assoc. Professor of English, John Jay College of Criminal Justice; Phyllis Franklin, executive director, Modern Language Association of America; Dimitri Gondicas, Professor of Greek, Princeton University; Vasos Papagapitos, vice president, Travel Dynamics; William Scott, Professor of Classics, Dartmouth College; Demosthenes P. Sofronas, Postmaster; and Constance Tagopoulos, Asst. Prof. Modern Greek Literature and Language, Queens College.

His Eminence established the Commission to bring public attention to the importance of the study of the Greek Language and Hellenic culture in the Greek Orthodox communities in the United States.

The Commission is called to submit a report to the Archbishop no later than one year following the time of their first meeting with findings based on public hearings, inquiries and studies over the course of the year. It is charged to assess the professional development, the curriculum and the materials used in the study of the Greek language and culture.

The other members of the Commission include: Michael S. Dukakis, Professor of Political Science, Northeastern University; Ernestine Friedl, Professor Emerita of Cultural Anthropology, Duke University; Sol Gittleman, Professor of German, Sr. Vice President and Provost, Tufts University; John Oller, Professor and Head, Department of Communicative Disorders, University of Southwestern Louisiana; John Paterakis, Pres. & CEO, H & S Bakery; Frank Ricciardone, Charge d'Affaires, U.S. Dept. of State; The Honorable Paul Sarbanes of Maryland; Manita Scoccimara, Member, Board of Trustees, American Farm School; The Honorable Olympia Snowe of Maine, and Anthony Stefanis, member of the executive committee of the Archdiocesan Council.
