Press Release of the Meeting

of the Holy Eparchial Synod

NEW YORK - Today, Thursday, September 24, 1998, the regular Fall Meeting of the Holy Eparchial Synod, under the chairmanship of His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon of America, took place in the Synod Chamber at the Archdiocese Headquarters between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

After brief introductory remarks of His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon, the Synod conducted individual examination and analysis of the eight agenda items.

Evaluation of the works and results of the 34th Clergy-Laity Congress.

Moral and material support of the Mission Metropolitanates of America categorically denies the report in a New York based Greek-language newspaper that the Chancellor of the Archdiocese, the Very Rev. Protopresbyter George Passias is to be transferred to the St. John the Theologian Church in Tenafly, New Jersey. The Office of Communications issued the following statement:

“There has been absolutely no change in the assignment or duties of Father Passias, nor is there any change anticipated. It is unfortunate that misinformation about the public policy of the Church should be trafficked in the media, without regard to official sources of information. In the media environment of our contemporary society, in which gossip and rumor often (and unfortunately) achieve the status of ‘fact’ by merely being put into print, we trust in the good sense and discretion of our Greek Orthodox Communities to sort out for themselves reality from fiction.”
