New Board of Trustees Hold First Meeting at Hellenic College/Holy Cross
Oct 19, 1998
NEW YORK - On Saturday, October 17, 1998, the first meeting of the new Board of Trustees of Hellenic College/Holy Cross for the 1998 - 2000 term was held at the Maliotis Cultural Center on the campus. Under the chairmanship of His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon, the Board of Trustees elected Mr. George Behrakis of Tewksbury, MA as the vice-Chairman, Mr. George Safiol of Weston, MA as the Treasurer, and the Rev. Economos Panagiotis Giannakopoulos of the St. George Church in Centerville, MA as the Secretary. These officers, together with the Archbishop, the President, the Deans of each School, and ten appointments by the Archbishop from the nominated members of the Board make up the Executive Committee. In an extraordinary show of unity and support, the Board of Trustees unanimously offered the services of each and every member to the Archbishop. Archbishop Spyridon is expected to name these ten appointments in the next few days.
In addition, the Board of Trustees asked President Ganas to organize two committees to report on two specific topics. Archbishop Spyridon himself asked the Board to look at the recommendation that came from the 34th Clergy-Laity Congress regarding the clergy/professors who were reassigned. This committee, to be comprised of five members of the Board, will study this matter. The second committee, to be comprised of eight members of the Board, will work on the NEASC and ATS recommendation regarding the ecclesiastical and academic structure at Hellenic College/Holy Cross.
Following the meeting, the Archbishop departed for Chicago, where he celebrated the Consecration Vespers at the Holy Cross Church in Justice, IL. On Sunday, the Archbishop presided at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Glenview, IL, and ordained the Rev. Deacon Peter Pappas to the Holy Priesthood. After the Divine Liturgy, the Archbishop held an open dialogue with the parishioners.
